Suburb: Auburn
Address: 93-105 Auburn Road (old Venture site)
Status: buildings demolished

Approved: DA227/03 (17/9/03): New plans for a mixed use development containing a ground level supermarket/general store, 125 units plus 2 basement levels of carparking. 9 storeys at Auburn Rd, 8 storeys at Harrow Rd

Clrs Curtin, Cassidy and Murray (Labor), Clrs Lam and Hua (Unity), Clr Tadros (Liberal), Crs Balendra and Saddick (Independents)
Voted against: Clr irene Simms (RAGAA)
Clrs Perry and Ghamraoui were absent from the meeting

Our concerns: Excessive height, totally out of character with surrounding heritage buildings, significant exceedence of floor space ratio, solar access to surrounding properties, 22 more units than previous approval, yet less than 1/3 of the commercial component; undersized balconies and insufficient communal area for residents

Approved: 2001   Status: buildings demolished *
Description
: two 8 storey towers ..one at Auburn Rd, 1 at Harrow Rd (103 units)
*Woolworths have withdrawn as the ‘anchor tenant’ for this development

Voted for: Cr Bala Balendra, Mohamed Saddick (Independent), Michael Ghamraoui, Michael Tadros (Liberal), Le Lam & Minh Hua (Unity)

Voted against: Cr Irene Simms (RAGAA), Chris Cassidy, Pat Curtin, Robert Murray &  Barbara Perry (Labor), Kim Appleby (independent)

Our concerns include: traffic concerns, exceeds height  limit; units in building opposite in Harrow Rd will be provided roller shutters and need to close windows to keep out noise from the development; height is more than council controls allow…contrary to view of streetscape envisaged by strategic town planners when council’s development guidelines were put together; much higher than any other development in the vicinity and is on ‘high’ side of shopping centre; is not sympathetic to historical Church next door or school opposite; is 8 storeys at Harrow Rd, when houses opposite are limited to 3 storeys; traffic issues, 17 units have no solar access, many need to have thicker glass because of noise from the site….height of this development is the equivalent of 9.7 residential floors.

Old Venture site. Building work has halted as Woolworths are no longer going to locate to this site. The building is approved at 8 storeys at the Auburn Rd frontage (shown here). This is not sympathetic to any development nearby!

Looking down Auburn Rd. Building site on far left of photo is owned by same developer, and is being built as a 2 storey commercial development. Chicken shop in between will be restricted in what they can do with their site, as both neighbouring properties will have new developments on them.

View of site from Harrow Rd. The building will be 8 storeys at Harrow Rd.

Harrow Rd.. Baptist Church shown will be sandwiched between a 7 storey and an 8 storey building, if current applications at Council are approved.
