Current Development Applications of Concern
Corner John Street & Childs Street and 1A Childs Street, Lidcombe |
Suburb: Lidcombe
Address: Cnr John Street & Childs Street (52 - 56 John Street) & 1A Childs Street
Approved: July 20, 2006. (DA327/04)
Status: Not yet built.
Description: Application was for a 8 storey development - 7 commercial tenancies at ground level, with 48 residential units above.
Comment: This application was unanimously approved, subject to changes, which include the deletion of 1 residential level, the consolidation of some smaller corner units with adjoining units to create larger dwellings, and other changes which improve the layout and function of the building.
While this building is, in our opinion, still excessive, it is a better solution for the block than the previous approval for this site, which the applicant could still build.
Previously Approved DA (2001):
Description: 7 storey development - 1 level of shops with 6 storeys of flats above (34 units).
Voted for: Crs Mohamed Saddick (Independent), Chris Cassidy, Pat
Curtin, Robert Murray & Barbara Perry (Labor), Michael Ghamraoui, Michael
Tadros (Liberal), Le Lam & Minh Hua (Unity)
Voted against: Cr Irene Simms (RAGAA), Bala Balendra
(Independent)
Cr Kim Appleby absent from meeting
Our concerns include: inappropriate development as site is surrounded
by single houses, outside council height limits, many units receive poor
solar access, built across different land zonings; against town planner's
recommendation. Not in spirit of 'shopping centre or commercial development'. |

Looking up John St towards site, the houses at
the corner and the first two shops form part of this 7 storey development.
Also included is the brick house at the top of Childs St.
